Welcome to Strange Coupling! A longstanding UW tradition, StrangeCo is an exciting opportunity for UW students to collaborate 1-on-1 with established Seattle artists.

Applications are due December 18th at midnight (deadline extended), with a final selection made in early January. Following the final selection we will be having an announcement party at Rodrigo Valenzuela's house (date tbd). This will mark the start of your collaborations. We are hoping to provide you with 2 months of time to collaborate. The final exhibit will be displayed at Charlie Schuck's Belltown Studio. The show will open on a Thursday in late March and run through the weekend. We look forward to seeing you all at the Fundraiser - December 14th at 7pm at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. Strange Coupling IX Opening Reception at Vermillion

See the collaborative work of this year's Strange Couples at the opening reception of Strange Coupling IX during Captiol Hill's second Thursday art walk at Vermillion. The show runs from April 4th to April 23rd. Selected works will be silent auctioned at the reception on April 14th, with bidding promptly ending at 8:00 (cash or check only, please).

Upcoming Exhibition! Coupling VIII: Matches Made

Strange Coupling, along with Ouch My Eye Gallery, is excited to present an exhibition of new collaborative work by prominent local artists and current art students at the University of Washington. Coupling VIII: Matches Made will feature the following artist pairs working across all disciplines:

The opening will be April 1, 2010 from 7:00 - 11:00 pm. All the work will be for sale by silent auction; bidding will begin when the doors open and will end promptly at 9:00 pm. The exhibition will run April 1 – May 6, 2010.

Press may preview the exhibition Wednesday, March 31 from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm.

This year’s artists were paired by Marisa Sánchez, Assistant Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art for the Seattle Art Museum and Michael Van Horn, Curator of The Joseph and Elaine Monsen Photography Collection.

Silent Art Auction

Strange Coupling is delighted to host its annual art auction on Thursday, January 21 at the School of Art, University of Washington. The auction will feature artwork from distinguished faculty, local artists, and emerging student talent. Extraordinary bargains on exceptional art, live music, and drinks are included in the $5 cover charge. All proceeds directly benefit the artists participating in Strange Coupling, an independent, student-run art organization.

Strange Coupling was formed in 2002 to establish a meaningful connection between local artists and current UW students. This year's collaborating artists include such notable names as Gala Bent, Heide Hinrichs, Britta Johnson, Sean Landis, Kate Lebo, Mike Pham, Tim Roda and Joey Veltkamp. Their partnerships with students will culminate in an exhibition at Ouch My Eye Gallery from April 1 – May 6, 2010.

PARKING: From I-5, drive East on NE 45th St about a 1/2 mile to 17th Ave NE. Turn right onto the main campus. Stop at the Gate #2 for directions to the School of Art and a parking permit. On-campus parking costs $6. Off-campus street parking is free after 6pm.

TO APPLY : Please deliver to the School of Art, Room 9 between 10AM and 4PM:

1. A hard copy of your completed application.
2. Digital samples (5 minimum) of your work on a CD/DVD.
3. One piece of your artwork to be donated to the auction*. OR be prepared to sign up to volunteer to work on the night of the auction.**

*The silent auction bidding will begin at $25, but please include the total value for your piece.

**You must donate your work or volunteer at the auction in order for you to be eligible to apply to the Coupling exhibition.

In order to be considered you MUST:
